Manning erupts and carries Sunday action
Gabriel Manning outscored 18 different SFL teams by himself this week, accounting for five total touchdowns (4 receiving, 1 punt return) in Tulsa's 52-17 beatdown over Carolina. The game was tied at 17 before the Desperados rattled off 35 consecutive points. Manning finished with 12 receptions for 236 yards. Lost in the headlines was a career night for quarterback Michael Brown, acquired this off-season in free agency. Brown finished 19/26 for 318 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Phoenix Jones returned to action and snagged a 112-yard performance on the ground in 20 carries.
The Canton Classics shut out and shut down the Arizona Scorpions 28-0, Canton's second-consecutive shutout at home after topping Vancouver 41-0 in last season's Wild Card game. Arizona tallied just seven first downs and quarterback Ashley Jackson completed just 8/25 passes. DJ Moses tallied just 19 yards on six carries. Newcomer back Logan lee stole the show, rushing for 145 yards on 22 carries. Robert Johnson had the same 22 carries for 80 yards. Arizona possessed the ball just 11:36 to Canton's 28:24.
Seattle won a wild 24-23 game over Los Angeles that saw the Lycans run out of time and five yards short of the end zone. LA outgained Seattle 407-317 behind quarterback Sully Richardson's 341 passing yards and two touchdowns. Five different Lycan receivers had 49 or more yards receiving. Halfback JW Doyle paced the Nemesis with 46 yards on the ground and 42 through the air. Seattle's Doug Day and LA's Tazzy Blackwell led both defenses with 12 solo tackles. Neither quarterback was sacked on 72 combined dropbacks.
In the nightcap, the Denver Nightwings made all the crucial plays to nab a 29-13 victory over Jacksonville, including a late first-half safety that put Denver up 19-7. The Kings totaled 241 yards of offense, but only had 52 plays to do it as Denver played keep-away. Fullback R.E. Mills led all ballcarriers with 22 for 83 yards. Quarterback Gene Struthers threw just four incompletions and equaled a 104.6 QBR. Conner Weston racked up 118 receiving yards in Jacksonville's loss. Denver safety Jeff Melinyshyn racked up 9 tackles, a sack, three tackles for loss, a pass deflection and an interception.
