SFL Power Rankings: NSYNC Karaoke Week

by Hunter Norwood

After five ranked matchups we still stand with the same 16 teams going into Week 9! The byes are back for another shortened slate of games but four of the seven are between ranked squads and Queen City on the outside looking in with a chance to build a case to get back in. Another week with a new #1; will the time off be enough for the Atoms to hold the top spot?

voting breakdown

Only a few points here this week to point out with the teams in the top 16 beginning to settle. Queen City is the closest right now to breaking back in but the two 8th plkace votes for Arizona are the main difference makers for propping them up so far aprt from the Corsairs. BJ is at it again with a Sin City 1st place vote with the next highest being an eight. Denver’s win streak comes to an end but still holds a good bit of goodwill among voters outside of Brett Killian.

leave of absence

#1 Albuquerque Atoms (6-2)

The non-runner rule strikes again and this time it was a collective effort amongst a few Atoms’ receivers. The first of the two game ban will come in next week vs a Florida team that knows all about the ruling as they just recently were freed from its grasp last week. But the time for Albuquerque is an awkward one as they are on bye this week with Florida the next and then another bye, Chicago, and a third and final bye. So this coaching staff will be hands-off for 5 weeks in total and two games where they hope to pick the right book previously used to combat an always dangerous Florida team and the Warriors who are looking for any kind of win they can get. Add to that the South division is still up for grabs and the Atoms are currently leading it with all four other teams within 2 games of overtaking and you suddenly see the precarious spot they’ve put themselves in but can at least be glad they aren’t playing any division opponents while under the ban.

week 9 premier matchup

#6 Mexico City Aztecs(-2.5) @ #7 D.C. Dragons | O/U 51.5 | FEB. 28th 10:15 PM EST

As previously touched on, the South is gearing up for another wild finish as we barrel towards the end of the regular season and Mexico City is sitting in 2nd place but with a win here can begin to put the pressure on a coach-less Albuquerque team. DC is sitting in a similar position of 2nd place in the North but only a half game back on Baltimore who has their own big game when they travel to giant killers Arizona. DC’s remaining schedule after this tilt with the Aztecs has much more winnable games than not and with a potential for Baltimore to trip up could put us back to the same position we always seem to find ourselves in with the Baltimore v DC game deciding the division. Mexico City’s schedule afterwards is a bit more of a murderers row of teams but they aren’t the defending champs for nothing. Mike Daggs is on record stating that he didn’t believe the Atoms could win it before the season and he doesn’t believe they can now. Can he and the Aztecs begin to show why or will the Dragons begin their own revolution up North?
