SFLm Expansion Finalists, Developmental team unveiled

by Cameron Irvine

The Simulation Football League is in the process of transforming its minor league, which has enjoyed seven successful seasons since it was introduced in late 2019. Earlier this summer, it was announced that the Albuquerque Atoms and Lexington Miners had picked up their options to continue under existing leadership and that the Lincoln Rattlesnakes under the same ownership would relocate the team to Philadelphia and become the Cougars.

Over the last three weeks, the SFL has given potential bidders an opportunity to prepare bids for the upcoming eighth season in November. The deadline to complete these bids has come and the finalists for the remaining five open positions include in alphabetical order:

  • Anchorage, Alaska
  • Bossier City, Louisiana
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Frisco, Texas
  • Huntsville, Alabama
  • Knoxville, Tennessee
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • San Jose, California

The league would like to thank the hard work that went into bids from Boston, Massachusetts; Des Moines, Iowa; Fairbanks, Alaska; Gainesville, Florida; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and San Bernardino, California. Unfortunately, these bids were unable to gather all the unnecessary assets in time to compete for the Season 8 season rapidly approaching.

"I would encourage all of the bids that failed to reach the finalist stage to keep the passion," said Commissioner Cameron Irvine. "Just because your bid isn't ready today, doesn't mean it can't be ready when the next opportunity strikes. There are some really passionate and talented people in this group that can be great leaders for years to come. For now, the other ten bids are further along and deserve to be given more attention as the league finalizes its teams for Season 8."

Over the next week, the league will be interviewing all finalist leadership groups before making a final decision at the end of the month, when the league will also release its schedule.

Also late last month it was announced that the SFL would be adopting a 'developmental team' for players who have had the least amount of time from entry into the SFLm to develop their skill levels to compete for starting jobs in the pros. The league established the top 52 user, non-owner and non-additional coach players most in need.

These players will progress at minor league progression structure and make up roughly 8% of the league's entire player pool. The league will evaluate players most in need throughout the year as new players enter the pros. Players will soon see the construction of the developmental team on the portal. The league will make an announcement on when the developmental team is complete and players can begin progressing at that level.
